Composer and Spectrum Founding Director Glenn Cornett works with digitally sampled sounds from Daniel Rothbart’s vessel sculptures in his new sound work Morphologies I. The piece applies aspects of Indonesian gamelan music as well as serial composition and spectral manipulations. The piece also takes advantage of Spectrum’s multichannel sound system, which has been expanded beyond its usual five-channel-plus-extended-range-subwoofer configuration for this occasion.
Also premiered is “Chakra Substrate for Amplified Instruments,” a composition by Glenn Cornett that layers vessel sounds with instrumental arrangement and live improvisation. Musicians include Glenn Cornett and Patrick Grant on guitar, Pas Musique on the electric violin and Lukas Ligeti on drums.
These original compositions were performed at Spectrum on New York’s Lower East Side as part of the SOUNDING SPACES project. SOUNDING SPACES is a fluid sculptural installation by Daniel Rothbart. Through a series of special performances, each of the sculptural elements becomes locus for collaborations with composers, choreographers, dancers and performance artists. This performance took place on October 8, 2013.
